How Do Colors Work?
Have you ever wondered how colors work? When you look at a red apple, a blue sky, or a yellow flower, it might seem like those things have color on their own. But the secret is that color comes from light.
Light is made up of energy that travels in waves. It moves, bounces, and reflects off everything around us. When sunlight—or any other light—hits an object, some of that light is absorbed and some of it bounces off. The color we see is the color that bounces back into our eyes.
Why We See Certain Colors
Imagine a yellow flower sitting in the sunlight. The light shining on it contains all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. The flower absorbs many of those colors, but the yellow light waves bounce off the petals and reach our eyes. That’s why we see yellow.
If you were to look at a monarch butterfly with bright orange wings, you would see orange because that’s the color bouncing off its wings. The other colors are absorbed into the scales of the butterfly’s wings and stay hidden from view.
God’s Design in Light and Color
God designed this process so beautifully. When He said, “Let there be light,” He created every wavelength of color we see today. Each one reflects His creativity—from the deep green of pine needles to the soft pinks of sunset clouds.
Every color in creation is a reflection of God’s light. As we explore His world, we get to see His power and beauty displayed in every shade and hue.
Light doesn’t just let us see—it fills the world with color, joy, and wonder, reminding us that the same God who made light also fills our hearts with His radiant truth.
