How Big are Moose?
Moose are some of the largest land animals in North America. They can stand nearly seven feet tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 1,500 pounds. Even though they are part of the deer family, called Cervidae, moose are much larger than the deer many of us are used to seeing in the woods. Because of their size, you might wonder, can moose swim? But God designed them with surprising abilities.
Can Moose Swim?
Yes, moose can swim, and they are very good at it.
Even though moose have hooves instead of flippers, they are strong swimmers. I have seen moose swim in water deeper than they are tall, including crossing lakes where their hooves no longer touch the bottom. Moose often swim to reach new areas, cross bodies of water, or search for food.
Moose are herbivores, meaning they eat plants. They especially enjoy aquatic plants that grow in lakes and ponds. Moose will lower their heads underwater to grab mouthfuls of plants, sometimes standing in water up to their necks or swimming to reach them. They also enter water to cool down on hot days since moose do not handle heat well.
How God Designed Moose For Water
God gave moose several special features that help them swim. Their long legs and large hooves act like powerful paddles, pushing water behind them as they move forward. Moose also have large nostrils that seal shut when they go underwater. This keeps water from entering their lungs and allows them to dive as deep as twenty feet.
A Thoughtful Design
Moses’s ability to swim reminds us of God’s careful design. From strong legs to self-sealing nostrils, moose are equipped to move confidently through water, find food, and stay cool.
