How Are Porcupines and Hedgehogs Different?
When we picture a spiky animal, two creatures often come to mind: porcupines and hedgehogs. At first glance, they might seem very similar. Both appear to wear a coat of sharp spikes that help protect them. But when we look more closely, we discover that these animals are actually quite different.
Let’s explore how porcupines and hedgehogs are different and what makes each one uniquely designed.
Porcupine vs Hedgehog Size Differences
One of the easiest ways to tell a porcupine and a hedgehog apart is by their size.
Hedgehogs are much smaller animals. They are usually about 6 to 12 inches long and weigh around 1 to 2 pounds. You could easily hold a hedgehog in your hands.
Porcupines, on the other hand, are much larger. They can grow to about the size of a medium-sized dog and weigh up to 20 pounds. This makes porcupines far bigger and heavier than hedgehogs.
Diet Differences Between Porcupines and Hedgehogs
Another important difference is what these animals eat.
Porcupines are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. They enjoy eating the inner bark of trees, along with twigs and leaves. This allows them to find food year-round, even during the colder months.
Hedgehogs are omnivores. That means they eat both plants and animals. Some of their favorite foods include insects, worms, and slugs.
Do Porcupines and Hedgehogs Lose Their Spikes?
Even though both animals have spines, they are very different.
Porcupines have quills that are loosely attached to their skin. These quills can come off, and new ones will grow in their place. This is part of how porcupines defend themselves.
Hedgehogs, however, have spikes that are firmly attached. Their spikes do not come off and do not regrow in the same way porcupine quills do.
Are Porcupines and Hedgehogs in the Same Animal Group?
You might think these two animals are closely related, but they are actually in different animal groups.
Porcupines are rodents. This means they have teeth that are always growing, and they must gnaw on things to keep their teeth from getting too long. In fact, porcupines are the second-largest rodent in North America.
Hedgehogs are not rodents at all. They belong to a different family of animals called Erinaceidae.
A Closer Look at God’s Design in Spiky Animals
Even though porcupines and hedgehogs may look alike at first, each one is designed in its own unique way. Their size, diet, and even their spikes all serve different purposes.
When we take time to look closely, we can see how each creature is made just right for the life it lives.
And next time you see a spiky animal, you’ll know exactly what to look for to tell whether it’s a porcupine or a hedgehog.
