A collaboration of writers. A collage of pieces focused on one weekly prompt. A five-minute challenge to write raw and exposed. Completely unedited. Magnificently honest.
This Week’s Prompt: Yes
“We goin’ on a date, Mommy?”
I back out of the driveway onto an unfamiliar road, and set my GPS to a park we do not know. I’m praying for a mountain view.
“Yes, sir!” I tell him excitedly. He clutches a wooden train in each hand. He’s all but bouncing in his carseat at the excitement. His brother and Daddy are on an adventure of their own, out floating crystal clear waters and waiting for dinner to nibble on their lines.
The baby gazes out the car window up into sapphire blue skies.
Since we arrived a couple of days ago, I’ve been planning my alone time. Trying to figure out which pockets of time in our 7-day vacation to fit in some running, reading, and writing. Yesterday I tried. I sat the boys in front of a movie and escaped out to the front porch of my husband’s Aunt’s house, where we are staying. I swung softly on the bench swing and stared at the mountains peaking out over house tops.
Then the middle one found me.
He climbs up onto the swinging bench with me and smiles. Yes, of course you can swing with me.
This morning his brother did the same. He was inside busying himself with cutting and pasting activities. Daddy and the middle one were out fetching some iced coffee for me. The eldest peaks through the screen door with scissors and activity sheets in hand.
“I’m just going to cut and paste out here with you, Mama.” He climbs up next to me on that bench.
Yes, Buddy. Please yes.
It ends up that rest and vacation and relaxation and restoration are hidden within those unsuspecting moments.
